Mobile telephone equipment and service is available that is relevant to a business man or woman on the road and in need of uninterrupted communications capability for voice, fax and e-mail. While the systems function similar to cellular, there are no holes or dead spots in coverage, except when in tunnels or when the line of sight to the satellite is blocked. The system we recommend is made by Westinghouse, and has a small tracking dome antenna, so that calls can be made while stopped or while traveling underway on the road. The Westinghouse is about the size of a child's bike helmet and less than 2.5 pounds,   The

transceiver and antenna RF amplifier combined, weigh under 15 pounds.

Think of one cell tower suspended in space 23,500 miles above North America instead of  200 ft towers on mountain/hill tops every 15 to 20 miles, in the heavily populated areas of the U.S. only.  The satellite coverage is uninterrupted between the Arctic and Venezuela and off-shore 600 miles in the east and 200 miles in the west.  In any area in between these limits you can complete calls from, or callers can ring, your satellite phone in your motor home or truck. The system cost with the tracking antenna is approximately $4,400 uninstalled depending on system type, options and accessories.  The air time is between $1.19 to $1.35/minute depending on the service plan.

This is a connected rate to any number in North America (no additional long distance or roaming charges like cellular).

There is another system available, the OmniQuest by Mitsubishi Electronics, which is a portable (lap-top satcom) for about the same price $4,500 which is a non-stabilized system.  This means it must be manually pointed at the satellite from a stationary location.  However it can be augmented, by additional ad-on equipment and cost, to provide mobile communications.  This system is highly portable weighing only 5.3 pounds.
